Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:
The Science System Investment and Performance (SSIP) Rōpū makes, manages, assesses, and advises on research investments to meet New Zealand’s economic, social, and environmental goals.
The Assessor Manager leads the Assessment and Contract Monitoring Advisors team of six within the Science System Investment and Performance (SSIP) Rōpū, and is responsible for ensuring each science proposal received by MBIE receives a fair and independent assessment.
The Assessor Manager will take the lead and run the assessment process for MBIE’s more complex science investment process and provide quality training and business support to MBIE’s pool of science Assessors.

- Experience in a science and/or research position in New Zealand is essential, possessing a good understanding of scientific peer review.
- Excellent reading and comprehension of often complex scientific proposals for research accompanying strong critical thinking skills and sound judgement.
- Demonstrated experience managing teams including mentoring staff and recruiting successfully
- Management experience in a science related field would be highly valued but not essential
- A keen eye for detail and knowledge of how to obtain research from several different scientific sources,to identify high calibre science assessors.
- Ability to effectively build relationships and gain the respect of technical scientific experts.
- Willingness to work out of standard business hours to connect with Assessors on international time zones.
- Be technically savvy with the ability to use a range of software packages and learn new software applications quickly.
- Excellent skills in process, planning and project management disciplines and be able to respond to tight deadlines.
- Maintains equanimity under pressure, able to manage competing demands and self-resilience.
- Effective oral and written communication skills; with the ability tailor your pitch to your audience
- Intellectual agility.
- Ability to influence at all levels of the organisation.
- Mature relationship management and conflict management skills.
- Acting with integrity.
